We are happy to announce the call for the 21st Munin Conference that will take place on April 20–22, 2027, in Tromsø, Norway. This will be the first Munin conference to be organized according to the biennial schedule. In the meantime, the organizing committee have keen ears on the movements and news in the community.

The Munin Conference on Scholarly Publishing has a history going back to 2006. In 2006, the University of Tromsø got its institutional repository for publications. In connection with the launch of the repository, a seminar was organized at the end of November, looking at the effects of the Norwegian system for financing institutions, which was in part based upon the publishing volume (and quality) of the institutions. This seminar has evolved into the annual Munin conference.

Johan Rooryck er en av frontfigurene i Open Access-bevegelsen, og ble kjent i OA-miljøet da han i 2015 ledet sitt hele redaksjonsteam til å forlate tidsskriftet 

. Johan har bidratt aktivt til utviklingen av åpen tilgang ved å være involvert i prosjektene som DIAMAS, CRAFT-OA og PALOMERA. Han er for tiden med-koordinator for 

  og hovedforsker i det EU-finansierte ALMASI-prosjektet. Johan er æresdoktor ved UiT Norges arktiske universitet for sitt arbeid innen åpen tilgang.

Jubileumssymposium for Johan Rooryck 

The theme of the seminar will be the recent developments in research evaluation, most notably “The Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment” (ARRA) from 2022, but other important initiatives include the Diamond Open Access-model and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA).

The aim of the seminar is to recognize different initiatives made to improve research assessment and, within this framework, to facilitate discussion between scientists and scholars from all over Europe. During the seminar we will hear from experts in the field of research policy within the Humanities and Social Sciences.

It is our mission to continually improve ERIH PLUS and to keep up with recent developments within the evaluation of research, and we believe that the seminar will be a rewarding forum for the exchange of ideas related to research assessment.

erih+ Seminar 

OPERAS, an infrastructure for scholarly communication in SSH, has been growing for almost a decade and is planning to become a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) in the upcoming years. SCIROS, launched in 2024, brings a fresh and ambitious perspective, building a vibrant and diverse network of researchers and research-performing organisations devoted to deepening the understanding of Open Science, fostering new approaches to its theory, and strengthening the OS practices and infrastructure ecosystem through collaboration.

By bringing together the OPERAS ecosystem and the SCIROS research network, the conference creates a unique platform for the entire Open Science community to engage in reflection, dialogue, and knowledge exchange across theory, empirical study, and infrastructure development. In this way, the conference theme, “One network, many possibilities. Strengthening the OPERAS community,” comes to life, showing how a connected yet diverse network can expand opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth in Open Science.

One Network, Many Possibilities: Strengthening the OPERAS Community

I Norge finnes en rekke tjenester, nettverk og initiativer for åpen vitenskapelig kommunikasjon. Til sammen utgjør de et rikt, men også sammensatt landskap, der ulike aktører dekker forskjellige behov og deler av publiseringsprosessen. Det reiser spørsmål om hvordan disse miljøene kan kobles bedre sammen, og samtidig knyttes tettere til den europeiske utviklingen på feltet.

OPERAS Norge er den norske noden i den europeiske forskningsinfrastrukturen OPERAS. Noden skal bidra til å koble norske miljøer tettere til europeiske initiativer, samtidig som norske behov og erfaringer bringes inn i det europeiske samarbeidet. For norske forskere, publiseringstjenester, tidsskrifter og andre aktører kan dette gi bedre tilgang til europeiske tjenester, verktøy, kompetanse, nettverk og finansieringsmuligheter, og gjøre det lettere å ta i bruk ressurser som allerede finnes.

Et konkret eksempel på dette arbeidet er oversettelsen av Diamond Open Access Standard (DOAS) til norsk. Standarden er utviklet gjennom DIAMAS som et felles rammeverk for kvalitet og transparens i diamantpublisering, og skal kunne brukes som et praktisk verktøy for å utvikle og vurdere publiseringstjenester og -praksiser. Oversettelsen illustrerer dermed en sentral funksjon for OPERAS Norge: å gjøre europeiske initiativer mer tilgjengelige og anvendelige for norske miljøer.

I dette innlegget presenterer vi arbeidet med OPERAS Norge, DOAS-oversettelsen og planene om å utvikle noden videre gjennom en søknad om forskningsinfrastruktur av nasjonal viktighet. Vi vil også vise mer konkret hva en styrket norsk node kan bety for feltet: bedre kobling til europeiske ressurser og samarbeid, større synlighet for norske behov og muligheter for å hente kompetanse, tjenester og utviklingsmidler tilbake til norske miljøer.

Vi vil samtidig spørre hva en slik nasjonal infrastruktur faktisk bør bidra med: Hvilke behov bør løses nasjonalt, og hvor gir det mest mening å bygge videre på eksisterende europeiske infrastrukturer og tjenester?

Hvordan kan norske miljøer for åpen vitenskapelig kommunikasjon kobles tettere sammen og knyttes sterkere til den europeiske utviklingen på feltet?
Gjennom OPERAS Norge ønsker vi å gjøre det enklere for norske aktører å ta i bruk europeiske ressurser, delta i relevante nettverk og få større innflytelse på utviklingen av feltet.

Diamond ERA: Fostering Openness in the European Research Area

" aims to highlight and promote Diamond OA as a sustainable, equitable and mission-driven model of scholarly publishing. It will provide a platform for engagement between policymakers, researchers, publishers, research funders, and infrastructure providers to collaboratively identify pathways toward stronger support and integration of Diamond OA practices in the European science policy landscape.


The Strategic Case for Diamond Open Access in SSH

Diamond OA offers a distinctive approach to scholarly publishing in which neither authors nor readers bear costs. Instead, financial support is directed to the institutions and infrastructures that provide publishing services. This model is especially significant in the SSH disciplines, where the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity matters a lot.


While the Diamond OA model already has strong roots in SSH publishing traditions across Europe, its development remains fragmented, underfunded, and insufficiently embedded in research assessment frameworks. At the same time, Europe is witnessing a growing political and institutional interest in non-commercial OA models, which emphasizes the timeliness and strategic importance of this conference.

The event will explore how the Diamond OA model can be scaled up and structurally supported across Europe, with a particular focus on enhancing equity, multilingualism, and innovation in scholarly communication. It will also showcase successful practices and infrastructures that are driving change from within the academic community.

The "Diamond ERA: Fostering Openness in the European Research Area" conference is a one-day policy-focused event that will bring together key stakeholders to advance the conversation on Diamond Open Access in the Social Sciences and Humanities across the European Research Area.

This opening session sets the strategic tone by mapping the policy and funding landscape shaping Open Access (OA) in Europe. Representatives from member states, European Commission, funders, and universities discuss how Diamond OA aligns with ERA objectives, research sovereignty, and multilingualism, identifying levers for sustainable implementation.

ERA: Fostering Openness in the European Research Area

This conference is organised by the OPERAS-PLUS project to support the development of the OPERAS Research Infrastructure, supporting open scholarly communication for Social Sciences and Humanities in the European Research Area and to open up collaboration and facilitate exchange.

The OPERAS Conference aims to be a discussion hub in which different stakeholders such as researchers, decision-makers, publishers, librarians, and institutional service providers can share and compare their take on the current scholarly communication system and their vision for a sustainable future. 

The OPERAS conference will address issues relevant to the Social Sciences and Humanities field in the Open Science paradigm involving equitable publishing, multilingualism, bibliodiversity, and other related topics.
